About This Site
This is a community-run weather and river level monitoring service, built and maintained by volunteers to give local communities better visibility of what is happening in their own back yard.
Why We Built This
Many communities in flood-prone areas have no local, real-time view of river levels or weather conditions at the hyperlocal scale that matters most. Official monitoring stations may be miles away, upstream or downstream, and may not reflect what's actually happening in your village.
By installing affordable weather stations with river depth sensors at key locations, communities can:
- See real-time river levels and weather conditions for their specific area
- Track how quickly a river is rising and get early warnings
- Receive automated email alerts when flood thresholds are approached
- View historical data and trends to better understand local flood patterns
- Share information across the community through a single, accessible dashboard
What This Is Not
The Environment Agency operates a comprehensive network of river gauging stations across England, providing authoritative flood warnings and data. You should always follow official flood warnings and guidance from the Environment Agency.
This site complements the official service by providing:
- Hyperlocal data — readings from your village, not a station miles away
- More frequent updates — every 60 seconds, compared to the EA's typical 15-minute intervals
- Additional weather context — rainfall, wind, temperature alongside river levels
- Community ownership — data collected and managed by local volunteers
For official flood warnings and river levels, visit the Environment Agency flood information service.
How It Works
Local volunteers install Ecowitt weather stations with river depth sensors at key points in their community. Each station automatically sends readings every 60 seconds to this website, where the data is processed, stored, and displayed.
The system calculates river level trends using statistical analysis over multiple time windows, generates predictions, and sends automated email alerts to anyone who has subscribed.
All data is publicly visible — no login is required to view current conditions, charts, or river levels. Creating an account allows you to set up personalised alerts.
Get Involved
This project relies on volunteers and community participation. You can help by:
- Hosting a weather station — if you're in a useful monitoring location, find out how to add a station
- Signing up for alerts — create an account and follow your local stations
- Spreading the word — share this site with your neighbours and community groups
About Crudwell FLAG
This site was originally developed for the Crudwell Flood Action Group (FLAG), a community group working to monitor and mitigate flood risk in the village of Crudwell, Wiltshire.
The platform is designed to be reusable by any community — if your village or town would like to join the network, please get in touch.
